The use of a surface disinfectant is one of the most important steps in the cleaning and preparation of any shop area that may have become contaminated. Because the tuberculosis organism is the most difficult bacterium to kill, it is used as a benchmark to determine both the speed of kill and the effectiveness of a disinfectant. If a disinfectant kills TB, it is presumed to kill all other bacteria at least as quickly, or perhaps more quickly than TB. Not all surface disinfectants are suitable for use on plastics. This is an important consideration when choosing a surface disinfectant. Many surfaces and components in a shop environment, including many countertops and furniture upholstery, are made of plastics. Any surface disinfectant must be used as directed by the manufacturer.
